In the evening of February 29th, 2012, South Korea’s SBS TV live telecast the 2014 FIFA qualifying match between South Korea and Kuwait, resulting in different degrees of decline in the ratings of television programs broadcast at the same time slot. The rating for MBC sageuk drama The Moon Embracing the Sun (The Sun and the Moon) on the night of February 29th, 2012 also fell by 5 percent from previous week, but still retained its position as the champion of the ratings ranking.
According to the statistics released by AGB Nielson ratings research company in the morning of March 1st, 2012, The Moon Embracing the Sun recorded the rating of 36.0% for episode 17 broadcast on February 29th, 2012. Although the rating dropped by 5.3% from the 41.3% of previous week, but it still occupied the first position for the highest ratings among all programs broadcast at the same time.
The SBS’s live telecast of World Cup qualifying football match between South Korea and Kuwait on February 29th, 2012 recorded the rating of 21.1%, a difference of nearly 15% with The Moon that Embraces the Sun.
An official of TV station said that in the past whenever there is an important football match was broadcasting live, the programs broadcasting at the same time slot would experience sharp fall in ratings. The TV series likes The Moon Embracing the Sun which still able to achieve 36% rating even though broadcasting at the same time with the football match are very rare, and this proven the huge popularity of The Moon Embracing the Sun in Korea.
