In SBS Wednesday and Thursday drama series Deep Rooted Tree, Jung Ki Joon (played by Yoon Je-moon), the third-generation leader, leads a secret society Hidden Roots (밀본 / 密本). The Hidden Roots group has a text book that originated from its first generation leader, Jung Do-jun.
The main aim of the group is to establish a political system that led by prime minister and oppose the creation the Hangul characters by King Sejong. The ideology of the Hidden Roots was written in a book, the book of Hidden Roots. As it’s written before the Hangul was officially published, the text is in Hanja.
Here’s the complete text of the book of Hidden Roots, with modern Hangul:
以君主为花 则宰相其本也
군주가 꽃이라면 재상은 그 근본이다.
虽花不实 而木不枯矣
꽃이 열매를 맺지 않는다 하더라도 나무가 말라죽지 않지만,
根不固 则木必死也
뿌리가 견고하지 않으면 나무는 반드시 죽는다.
花不实则折之而已矣
꽃은 열매 맺지 않으면 꺾일 뿐이다.
君主之位 即所以愼择贤相 相以拹议国事
군주의 지위는 곧 현명한 재상을 신중히 선택하여 서로 국사를 협의하는 자리이며,
而此朝鲜之譬如木 而君主象徵的为花而已
이 나라 조선은 비교하자면 나무와 같고 군주의 상징은 꽃일 뿐이다.
则开花之根本 谁耶
그렇다면 꽃을 피우는 근본은 누구인가.
敎化民草而引导正君者 则朝鲜之根本宰相也
백성들을 교화하고 올바르게 임금을 이끄는 사람은 조선의 근본인 재상이다.
然则宰相之本何也 由科举而出身之官也
그렇다면 재상의 근본은 무엇인가. 과거를 통해 출신한 관리들이다.
然则百官之本何耶 朝鲜士大夫者也
그렇다면 모든 관리들의 근본은 무엇인가. 조선의 사대부이다.
是根本之体系则官僚制 曰宰相总裁制也
이 근본의 체계는 관료제이니, 곧 재상이 총괄하는 제도이다.
朝鲜之士大夫乎 宜作为根 以奉社稷 以育良臣 以立贤相焉
조선의 사대부들이여. 마땅히 뿌리가 되어 사직을 받들고 좋은 신하를 기르고 현명한 재상을 세워야 한다.
则朝鲜曰本为万世继承不穷矣 须为根中之根 可也
그리하면 조선은 근본이 만세토록 이어져 끝이 없을 것이니, 근본중의 근본이 되어야 할 것이다.
此是予郑道传所以作根中之根 而隐密之本则密本也
이것이 나 정도전이 뿌리중의 뿌리이며 은밀한 근본을 만든 이유이니, 곧 밀본이다.
(是)为密本也 密本者所以正君而格君者也 又立贤相 经营朝鲜也
(이것이) 밀본이니, 밀본은 임금을 바르게 하고 임금을 바른 길로 이끌고, 또한 현명한 재상을 세워 조선을 경영한다. (为密本也가 좀 어색하네요)
士大夫乎 当为朝鲜之根焉 须为密本 守朝鲜也
사대부들이여 마땅히 조선의 근본이 되어라. 마땅히 밀본이 되어 조선을 지켜야 한다.

English translation of the text of Hidden Roots secret group:
The monarch is the flower, yet prime minister is the root
Even if the flower does not bear fruit, but tree does not die
If the root is not solid, the tree will surely die
The flower does not bear fruit then just cut if off
The position of monarch, has to choose a worthy prime minister carefully, to discuss the national affairs
And Joseon is the example of tree, and the symbol of monarch is flower
If so, who is the root of flowering
Enlightening the people and led the righteous king, is me the prime minister that is the root of Joseon
In that case what is the root of prime minister, is officer originating from examination
In that case what is the root of all officers, is Joseon literati and officialdom
Is the fundamental system of bureaucracy, named prime minister as president system
Scholar-bureaucrats of Joseon, should be the root, to serve the country, to nourish good officer, to promote wise prime minister
Then for Joseon can inherit eternally continuously, has to be the root of the root
This is why Jeong Do-jeon becomes root of the root, and the fundamental of the secret root is Hidden Roots
Is for the Hidden Roots, members of Hidden Roots led the right king and are the one correct the king, also establish wise chancellor, manage Joseon
