The new KBS 2TV drama Love Rain only managed to record single digit ratings on its debut on March 26th, 2012, came in last in the ranking of viewership ratings chart on the night. South Korean audience generally heaped praise upon the beautiful scenes of the drama, but some viewers pointed out that the plot of Love Rain is too old-fashioned, and the shadow of Winter Sonata can be seen everywhere.
According to statistics released by AGB Nielson Media Research agency on the morning of March 27th, 2012, the rating for episode 1 of Love Rain broadcast on the night of March 26th, 2012 is only 5.8%, not only far behind MBC’s Lights and Shadows, but also at same distance from SBS drama which was similar just debuted, Fashion King. Love Rain is produced by director Yoon Suk Ho and screenwriter Oh Soo Yun of Winter Sonata, and starring Jang Geun Suk, Yoona and other popular actors, as such the ratings outlook for the drama before broadcast began was generally optimistic, but unexpectedly the ratings on debut is only slightly more than 5%.
The acting of main leading actors Jang Geun Suk and Yoona in the first episode has been praised by viewers. In addition, the perfect re-rendering of landscape and color from South Korea of 1970s has also received rave reviews. But some viewers pointed out that the plot of love rain lack of new ideas, is not much different from romance drama in the past, and the shadow of Winter Sonata can be seen everywhere.
Also broadcasting on the night of March 26th, 2012, MBC’s Lights and Shadows recorded rating of 20.6%, firmly occupying the top spot of ratings ranking chart. SBS’s Fashion King starring SNSD member Kwon Yuri recorded rating of 9.2%, leading Love Rain temporarily.
